Charlie Saved the Day

03 Feb 2012

It's February first and the weather here in Pennsylvania should be bitter cold with snow and ice on the ground but the morning is mild with expected highs of 60 degrees. I head out to one of my favorite spots, the site of a colonial era grove that saw an abundance of activity back in the day but has sat idle for the better part of the last century. This grove also abuts our local park, another favorite spot of mine. Finds in the grove are few and far between as it has been detected heavily in the past. Most local detectorists have written it off as hunted out but when you do make a find there it's always a good one. Like many prior trips to the grove, I reach the end and aside from a clad dime, I leave empty handed and proceed into the park. My luck doesn't seem to be much better in the park with only a modern nickel to show for my efforts so, fifteen cents to the good and two and a half hours of detecting behind me, I start making my way back the car. I dig a few signals along the way, mostly possible gold signals but pull tabs and can slaw are all they produce. I've been to all corners of this park and I know i'm about to make the walk of shame to my car, which I can see now, parked at the top of the hill. I get a signal that wouldn't really suggest a coin, It's whispery and faint and the audio tone is closer to mid range than the high pitch of silver. The depth meter is close to the bottom and there is no blanking of the threshold. With nothing to lose and everything to gain I decide to dig and from about ten inches I pull out the best coin I've ever found in the park, a 1778 spanish 2 reales, and that's how Charlie saved the day. There's nothing I can say about Minelab technology that most Minelab users don't already know so I'll just sum it up with "incredible." Steve - Pennsyvania, USA
