A Proposal with a Difference

30 Apr 2011

I had been planning it since pretty much mid January. On the day of the Royal Wedding I would take my girlfriend to the beach for some 'metal detecting'. Although she doesn't detect herself she has always tagged along with me in the six years we have been going out and shown an interest in my finds so she shouldn't find it strange. However, this search is going to turn up a platinum engagement ring with a proposal which she hopefully would say yes to... The look on the Jeweller's face when I told him that she was going to find her own engagement ring with a metal detector as part of the proposal he thought I had went bananas! The way I was going to do it is this. I'd carry it with me inside its own box and then have this box inside a bigger aluminium watch tin box which wouldn't arouse suspicion. I'd scoop out some sand at the beach, and when she wasn’t looking, put the ring into the hole instead for a few seconds to get her to come over to help me check the signal by swinging the metal detector for me. It will be at that point I would get on one knee and propose. Yes, there are a few things that could potentially go wrong with this plan, What if you lose the ring? some people asked. I had every faith in the Sovereign GT though as it hadn't let me down yet so I was quite confident it would produce the goods for me! I got out with girlfriend to ‘metal detect’ around lunchtime Friday after she got a look at the Royal Wedding on TV and admired Kate's wedding dress. Little did she know I would be asking her to marry me in a few hours time! I was quite nervous but tried my best not to show it incase I gave it all away.
